The South Yorkshire Aircraft Museum is based at former RAF Doncaster and provides a valuable portrayal of aviation history. Its collection of 15 British jets and helicopters are displayed in the historic Bellman aircraft hangar and the original Air Ministry sectional timber huts are used to house its wartime period and Sheffield blitz exhibits. During the war the Doncaster airfield had an important role and the base housed the Civil Aircraft Flight of the National Communications Flight from which the RAF 217 Squadron were formed. From March to August 1941, 613 Squadron (City of Manchester) Royal Auxiliary Air Force also operated from Doncaster. After WWII the airfield was used to convert aircraft for civilian use and as a flying school to train RAF reserve pilots. From the 1960's the airfield was used by a gliding club until it closed in 1992.
Many of the exhibits at the museum include restored aircraft which was shot down in battle and whose pilots lost their lives whilst at the controls or shortly after rescue. Do the restless spirits of these unfortunate brave and souls continue to linger around the wreckages from which their young lives were so tragically lost?
A fascinating array of paranormal activity has been experienced at the museum;
Ghost of a man walking in and around main hangar
Unexplained flashes of light and photographed light anomalies
Faces being touched by icy hands
Oppressive feelings and the sense of being watched by an unsettled presence
Loud bangs and knocks in response to questions
Hair being pulled or being tapped on the shoulder
Dramatic drops in temperature and ice-cold breezes
Sound of voices coming from a radio used only for display
Ghostly disembodied and beckoning hand witnessed in exhibits area
Dark shadows seen moving around the original hangar buildings
Join the Ghost Night Events team as we try and discover whether the sad and tormented souls who perished in battle remain linked to the building they once knew or the aircraft and objects with which they once had a close association. Our event will include a tour of the building, psychic workshops and vigils, séances and experiments using ghost detecting equipment in all haunted areas. Tea, coffee and light refreshments will be served.
Participants are welcome to use flash photography and recording equipment at this location.
